Our original plan for Matthew’s 9th birthday was to take two friends to a local pizza and arcade.  However, all the little man had on his mind was a sleep over.  So a simple party expanded to inviting 7 boys to sleep over in our home for a Lego Harry Potter birthday, inspired by our Harry Potter weekend.

We began our evening by sorting boys into a Hogwarts house and providing them with their acceptance letter and coursebook.

We then divided up into three groups.  Defense Against the Dark Arts class consisted of a virtual training (i.e. Lego Harry Potter for the Wii).  In Care of Magical Creatures, party-goers used Legos to create their own magical creature.  In the kitchen we held Potions class, where common drinks and food items were magically labelled and the boys created their own concoctions.

The evening finished up with a viewing of the first Harry Potter film, chocolate frogs, and hours of gabbing and wrestling.

In the morning we held Divination Class, with fortunes stuffed in balloons, and the OWL exams.  Lastly, the boys were able to use the gold coins they had earned throughout the party to purchase treats at Honey Duke’s Sweetshop.

Matthew and all the boys had a great time, but I can guarantee you that we will do two boys at the pizza place next year.

How did you make the banner? I’d love to make one for my son. Thanks!

I downloaded the HarryP font from dafont.com and then simply typed up Happy Birthday in Word (using the index card templated and putting only 1 letter in each box of the table). I then used a papercutter to cut each card out, backed it with a scrapbook paper and then used tiny clothespins to attached each card to a ribbon. The tiny clothespins were found in the scrapbooking section of a craft store years ago, but decorative paperclips would work as well. Hope that helps!
