The Birthday Party – Lego Harry Potter for a 9 year-old
The Raven's Spell is currently no longer being actively updated. Please stop by Dare 2 Dream Dare 2 Do to find new and exciting content.
Our original plan for Matthew’s 9th birthday was to take two friends to a local pizza and arcade. However, all the little man had on his mind was a sleep over. So a simple party expanded to inviting 7 boys to sleep over in our home for a Lego Harry Potter birthday, inspired by our Harry Potter weekend.
We began our evening by sorting boys into a Hogwarts house and providing them with their acceptance letter and coursebook.
We then divided up into three groups. Defense Against the Dark Arts class consisted of a virtual training (i.e. Lego Harry Potter for the Wii). In Care of Magical Creatures, party-goers used Legos to create their own magical creature. In the kitchen we held Potions class, where common drinks and food items were magically labelled and the boys created their own concoctions.
The evening finished up with a viewing of the first Harry Potter film, chocolate frogs, and hours of gabbing and wrestling.
In the morning we held Divination Class, with fortunes stuffed in balloons, and the OWL exams. Lastly, the boys were able to use the gold coins they had earned throughout the party to purchase treats at Honey Duke’s Sweetshop.
Matthew and all the boys had a great time, but I can guarantee you that we will do two boys at the pizza place next year.

On Monday I posted about my strange and surprising personal growth that has occurred over the last few months. I wasn’t expecting it, which is likely why it happened, but I am so going to roll with the punches. With my emerging evolution, I no longer find I fit into the niche I have built [...]
Something happened to me recently that I just can’t explain. Somehow, I began looking in the mirror and decided to make changes. And I did just that. I have felt like my life was at a crossroads for a very, very long time. I was weighed down with uncertainty, fear, and anxiety. I mean, come [...]
I have this thing called a thesis to write, something due in about 4 weeks, and I am avoiding it like the plague due to fear and just plain stress. I have found that when one wants to procrastinate, these 4 things work like a charm. 1. Pinterest. Not shocking to anyone 2. Google Reader. [...]
The new year is upon us, as well as what will hopefully be my last semester of graduate school. That means I am slaving away on a thesis and most, if not all, my creative juices are being drained away. While I complete my work and prepare to graduate, things here at The Raven’s Spell [...]
Each Friday I share with you my five favorite blog posts of the week. Perhaps they were heart-warming, silly, informative, or just plain fun. No matter what, they were ones that stuck with me and I want to share with you! Real Rooms - If you are anything like me, you love a good home improvement [...]

How did you make the banner? I’d love to make one for my son. Thanks!
I downloaded the HarryP font from dafont.com and then simply typed up Happy Birthday in Word (using the index card templated and putting only 1 letter in each box of the table). I then used a papercutter to cut each card out, backed it with a scrapbook paper and then used tiny clothespins to attached each card to a ribbon. The tiny clothespins were found in the scrapbooking section of a craft store years ago, but decorative paperclips would work as well. Hope that helps!
